BREAKING: Tottenham Complete Club-Record £100m Signing of Sandro Tonali From Newcastle United

The Italy international becomes Tottenham Hotspur's most expensive signing ever as Roberto De Zerbi continues an ambitious summer rebuild ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a club-record transfer worth £100 million, marking another statement of intent in what has become one of the Premier League’s most aggressive transfer windows.

The deal is reportedly structured as £92.5 million upfront, with an additional £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons.

Tonali is also expected to become one of Tottenham’s highest-paid players, earning more than £275,000 per week.

The 26-year-old midfielder had attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Manchester City, but opted for Tottenham to reunite with fellow Italian and new head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

De Zerbi’s Rebuild Continues

Tonali’s arrival comes just days after Tottenham broke their transfer record by signing midfielder Mateus Fernandes in an £85 million move.

The two midfield acquisitions have pushed Spurs’ spending beyond £200 million this summer, highlighting the club’s determination to recover after enduring consecutive disappointing Premier League campaigns.

Tottenham have also strengthened other areas of the squad by signing defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion, while experienced players Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dúbravka have all joined on free transfers.

The spending spree signals a dramatic change in the club’s recruitment strategy under its new leadership, with a clear focus on rebuilding a squad capable of challenging near the top of the Premier League.

Tonali Bids Emotional Farewell to Newcastle

Following confirmation of the transfer, Tonali posted an emotional farewell message to Newcastle supporters, reflecting on his three years at the club.

He thanked manager Eddie Howe, teammates, club staff and supporters for standing by him throughout his time on Tyneside.

“The game brought me to Newcastle.

Today I leave with my wife and our son, born during my time here.

This city gave me more than football. It gave me a home, moments I’ll hold onto forever, and people I will always be grateful for,” Tonali said.

He also reflected on helping Newcastle end their long wait for major silverware, describing the club’s triumph at Wembley as a historic achievement shared with supporters.

Newcastle Secure Major Profit

Newcastle are understood to view the transfer as excellent business.

The Magpies signed Tonali from AC Milan in 2023 for around £55 million, meaning the club stands to make approximately £45 million in profit if all performance-related clauses are triggered.

Club officials reportedly believe the sizeable transfer fee will provide flexibility to strengthen multiple positions before the new season begins.

Newcastle have already begun pursuing reinforcements and are expected to accelerate their recruitment plans in the coming weeks.
