Spain’s political debate over identity and immigration has found an unlikely focal point in football sensation Lamine Yamal after left-wing lawmaker Ione Belarra used the teenage star’s family to champion a vision of a more diverse and multicultural Spain.
Speaking at a political event in Andalusia, Belarra praised Yamal’s younger brother for celebrating the footballer’s achievements during Spain’s victorious World Cup campaign, arguing that the scene represented the country she believes Spain should embrace.
“That Spain Is Our Spain”
Belarra described the image of Yamal’s three-year-old brother joyfully celebrating his sibling’s success as a powerful symbol of modern Spain.
“How beautiful and how I like to see a three-year-old black boy on television going around the world, celebrating a goal and celebrating the successes of his brother,” she said. “That country, that Spain, is our Spain.”
She added that she is convinced many Spaniards share that vision of the country.
The Podemos leader contrasted what she called “the Spain of Lamine Yamal” with the vision promoted by Spain’s conservative parties, specifically mentioning the Popular Party (PP) and the far-right Vox.
Belarra said she prefers “the Spain of Lamine Yamal and his brother” over what she described as the Spain being portrayed by those political parties. She argued that Spain’s history has long been shaped by migration and cultural diversity, stating that the country “has been a country of migrants.”

Although only in his teens, Yamal has emerged as one of Spain’s biggest sporting icons. Born in Spain to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, the Barcelona winger has frequently been cited as an example of the country’s increasingly multicultural society.
His performances on the pitch have earned widespread admiration, while his family’s visibility during international tournaments has also attracted public attention.
Belarra’s remarks suggest that Yamal’s rise has become about more than football, with politicians increasingly referencing his story in broader discussions about immigration, diversity and national identity.
Debate Reflects Spain’s Broader Political Divide
Immigration has become one of Spain’s most divisive political issues in recent years. Left-wing parties have generally argued that immigration enriches Spanish society and reflects the country’s modern identity, while conservative and far-right parties have pushed for stricter immigration controls and stronger emphasis on traditional national identity.
Belarra’s speech places Yamal at the centre of that ongoing debate, presenting the football star and his family as symbols of an inclusive Spain that embraces diversity rather than fears it.
