Universal's epic adaptation of Homer's classic delivers Christopher Nolan's biggest worldwide debut ever, outperforming expectations and revitalising the summer box office.

Christopher Nolan has added another blockbuster to his résumé after The Odyssey opened to an estimated $124.5 million at the North American box office and $264.1 million worldwide during its debut weekend, giving the filmmaker the strongest global opening of his career.

The performance also makes The Odyssey the third-largest domestic opening weekend of 2026, trailing only Pixar’s Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Biggest Domestic Opening Weekends of 2026

Rank Film Opening Weekend
1 Toy Story 5 $159 million
2 The Super Mario Galaxy Movie $131 million
3 The Odyssey $124.5 million

The result is particularly notable because The Odyssey defied several traditional box office challenges. The nearly three-hour historical epic carries an R rating and adapts a 3,000-year-old Greek poem—factors that are rarely associated with major commercial success.

Instead, audiences turned out in force, propelling the film well beyond many industry expectations.

Nolan Records His Biggest Global Opening Ever

Beyond its domestic success, The Odyssey has become the largest worldwide opening in Christopher Nolan’s directing career.

Christopher Nolan’s Biggest Global Opening Weekends

Rank Film Worldwide Opening
1 The Odyssey $264.1 million
2 The Dark Knight Rises $249 million
3 The Dark Knight $198 million
4 Oppenheimer $180 million

The opening surpasses The Dark Knight Rises, which previously held Nolan’s best worldwide debut, and continues the momentum the director built following the Oscar-winning success of Oppenheimer.

Premium Screens Drive Massive Revenue

A major contributor to the film’s performance was demand for premium cinema formats.

More than half of domestic ticket revenue came from premium large-format auditoriums, while IMAX screenings alone generated over one-fifth of global ticket sales. The film is also the first feature shot entirely using IMAX cameras, with many premium screenings selling out well in advance.

Universal reportedly invested approximately $250 million in producing the film and another $125 million in worldwide marketing, making it one of the studio’s biggest financial bets in recent years. The strong debut places the film on a promising path toward recovering its substantial investment through theatrical earnings.

Adapted from Homer’s legendary poem, The Odyssey follows Odysseus’ perilous journey home after the Trojan War.

Matt Damon stars in the title role alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and John Leguizamo. The film has earned strong critical reviews and enthusiastic audience reactions, helping generate positive word-of-mouth after its release.

Summer Box Office Finds New Momentum

The film’s arrival comes after a series of disappointing theatrical releases and has provided a significant boost to the summer movie season.

Industry tracking indicates domestic box office revenue has climbed above last year’s pace, with analysts expecting the summer season to surpass $4 billion as audiences continue returning to cinemas for major event films.

With no major blockbuster competition arriving until the end of July, The Odyssey appears well positioned to maintain its momentum and extend what has already become one of the year’s most successful theatrical launches.
