A consortium led by businessman Amit Bhatia and backed by the family of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal is in discussions to acquire a significant minority stake in Liverpool Football Club, in a transaction that could value the Premier League champions at more than $6 billion.
The proposed investment, if completed, would rank among the largest valuations ever achieved by a football club, reflecting the continued surge in investor appetite for elite English football assets and the Premier League’s expanding global commercial appeal.
Liverpool’s owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed that the consortium has formally expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment. “An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club,” FSG said in a statement.
Amit Bhatia’s Growing Sports Investments
Bhatia, who is married to Lakshmi Mittal’s daughter, has steadily expanded his interests in professional sports.
Ahead of the Liverpool discussions, he agreed to transfer his stake in Championship side Queens Park Rangers (QPR) to majority shareholder Ruben Gnanalingam, a move designed to avoid conflicts arising from owning interests in multiple football clubs.
The talks also follow the Mittal family’s acquisition earlier this year of a minority stake in the Rajasthan Royals, one of the Indian Premier League’s most prominent cricket franchises, highlighting the family’s increasing focus on global sports investments.
Liverpool has become one of the world’s most valuable sports franchises since FSG acquired the club for £300 million in 2010.
Financially, Liverpool reported record revenue exceeding £700 million during the 2024–25 season, up from £613 million a year earlier, driven by strong commercial partnerships with brands including Standard Chartered, Adidas and Google Pixel.
FSG has also demonstrated a willingness to bring in strategic investors. In 2023, it sold a minority stake in Liverpool to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity while retaining overall control of the club.
