How to get that beautiful leather furniture at 30% discount

Everyone loves the luxurious look and feel of leather chairs. And we all know that with the highly skilled carpenters we have nowadays, you can build very good leather furniture, comparable to what we find in luxury showrooms. The big problem is successfully buying “leather” for your dream furniture when you set out. If what you are looking for is leather that you will care for with tender love and care — monthly polishing with leather cream to retain its lustre and not crack for a decade and more — you need about N900,000:00 to make a standard 6-seater set. You can save 30 to 40 % off the price you get in showrooms and with a little investigation, you could find “carpenters” or more organized workshops who are a bit more expensive but more assuring, who could make chairs that look as beautiful as the ones you find in stores.

So here are the three key steps to making your leather furniture:

Choose/buy Your Leather:

leather choices

The leather is a natural material and no two hides will be exactly the same. As a result, leathers may differ in colour or thickness and can show scars and other imperfections.

You can get either of the following:

     • Pure natural leather (Top/full grain) – Highly durable premium leather and the most expensive providing pure natural look of animal hide with little or no correction or processing involved. It gets better with age. (₦10,000 – ₦18,000/yard)

     • Corrected or Finished Leather – The natural patterns have been extra stretched or re-patterned to have a different feel and texture. It is usually, colour corrected to a specific taste and design and it is the most common leather type people are familiar with in Nigeria. (₦7,000 – ₦15,000/yard)

     • Faux or bonded leather – Made of ground-up leather scraps and polyurethane, creating a product that looks like leather but doesn’t have its durability or feel. And just like vinyl (a leather look-alike),
it may be used on the sides or backs of a piece of furniture as a mix to save cost. (₦2,000 – ₦8,000/yard)

     • Nubuck Leather – The amazing quality of furniture built with this leather type its water resistance. It’s much tougher than you would imagine. Though with a velvety touch, it is easier to maintain and clean. (₦2,000 – ₦5,000/yard)

     • Suede Leather – A form of split leather most suited for furniture accessories like throw pillows rather than the real furniture because it picks up stains so often and quite difficult to maintain and certainly not suited for heavy or high traffic use. (₦1,500 – ₦4,000/yard)

The most popular leather hub in Lagos is Mushin or Kano up north which is much closer to the raw materials. Here are a few things to know when purchasing leather:

Leather from Kano, Nigeria     • Leather is purchased in either yards or square foot and 1Yard of leather = 18sqft which is 36 long and 54 wide.
     • Quantity of leather depends on size, shape and number of the seater of the furniture.
     • A maximum of 5yrds (90sqft) of leather is used for a Sofa/armchair/accent styles, 12yrds (230sqft) of leather is used for 2 seater sofas, 18yrds (350sqft) of leather is used for 3 seater sofas and 42yrds (756sqft) of leather is used for a sectional seater.
     • Flip the leather to the reverse, stretch the leather, squeeze or rub leather surface against a material to how genuine.
     • Leather from bull hide cost more than those from cowhide in case you are sourcing directly.

Choose a design:
A million and one furniture designs exist these days from online to local catalogues availing you the privilege to customize your furniture which is an extra plus building your own furniture locally gives to you. This is basically building to your taste and need.
