Google has introduced new artificial intelligence features that could change how Nigerian businesses create, target and measure Search advertising campaigns.
The announcement, made in Lagos by Google’s Director for East and West Africa, Olumide Balogun, centres on two developments: a new reporting system for understanding the customer journey and the expansion of AI Brief, a Gemini-powered tool that lets advertisers guide campaigns using everyday language.
For businesses already spending money on Google Ads, however, the bigger question is what these tools actually mean in practice.
What is Google AI Max?
AI Max is not a new advertising platform that businesses have to move to. Google describes it as an optimisation layer that operates within existing Search campaigns.
It uses artificial intelligence to improve search-term matching, advertising copy and landing-page selection, while giving advertisers additional controls over how campaigns are managed.
Google first introduced AI Max in 2025 and subsequently made it available globally. By September 2026, Google was moving the product beyond its beta phase, while some existing Search campaigns were being automatically upgraded to AI Max features.
Is AI Max a replacement for Google Ads?
No.
AI Max works inside Google Ads. Businesses still create and manage Search campaigns, but AI Max adds automated targeting and creative capabilities to those campaigns.
This means a Nigerian company does not need to abandon Google Ads and sign up for an entirely separate advertising service to use AI Max.
Is Google AI Max free?
The AI Max feature itself is part of Google Ads rather than a separately priced subscription.
However, businesses should not confuse access to an AI-powered advertising feature with free advertising.
AI Max operates within Search campaigns, meaning businesses still need an advertising campaign and advertising budget. The amount a company spends depends on its campaign settings, bidding strategy, competition and other factors.
In other words, AI Max does not mean free Google advertising.
Can small Nigerian businesses use it?
Yes. AI Max is designed for advertisers using Search campaigns, rather than being restricted to multinational corporations.
Google has made AI Max available globally, and its current setup documentation allows advertisers to activate the feature on new or existing Search campaigns.
That potentially includes businesses such as retailers, professional-service firms, technology companies, restaurants, travel businesses and other companies that use Google Search to reach customers.
The important requirement is not simply being a particular size of business. The business needs an eligible Google Search advertising setup, and some AI Max functions have additional campaign requirements.
Does it work for every type of business?
Not necessarily in exactly the same way.
AI Max is primarily built around Search advertising. It can help businesses that want to reach people actively searching for products, services or information connected to what they offer.
Google says AI Max is specifically designed for Search campaigns, distinguishing it from Performance Max, which covers a broader range of Google advertising inventory.
So a business whose marketing strategy depends heavily on Search could potentially find the tools more directly relevant than a company whose advertising is primarily built around other channels.
Google has also expanded AI Max capabilities into Shopping and travel-related formats, showing that the technology is moving beyond traditional text-based Search advertising.
What does the new Google reporting tool actually do?
This may be one of the more useful developments for businesses that struggle to understand what happens after an advert is clicked.
Google says its new reporting feature will bring the Search advertising journey into a single view.
Advertisers will be able to see the search term that triggered an advert, the creative the customer saw and the webpage where the customer landed.
Previously, information of this kind could be spread across different sections of Google Ads. The new reporting interface is intended to make it easier to connect customer intent with advertising performance.
For a Nigerian retailer, for example, this could make it easier to distinguish between customers searching specifically for a product and customers arriving through broader searches.
What is AI Brief?
AI Brief is Google’s Gemini-powered tool for giving instructions to AI Max in ordinary language.
Rather than relying entirely on technical campaign settings, advertisers can provide detailed instructions about their business, audience and messaging.
Google says advertisers can use natural-language guidance to influence what the system should communicate or avoid communicating.
That could be useful for businesses with strict brand requirements.
For example, an advertiser could specify that certain claims should not be made, that particular offers should receive greater emphasis or that certain audiences should be prioritised.
Google is currently expanding AI Brief through a closed beta, with seven additional languages added: Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.
Will businesses still control what their adverts say?
Yes, but AI Max increases the role of automation.
Google’s AI Max tools can generate and optimise advertising assets based on information including a business’s website, landing pages, existing advertisements and keywords.
Advertisers still have controls over elements such as brands, locations and other campaign settings.
Google has also introduced text guidelines that allow advertisers to tell its AI what kinds of language or concepts to avoid.
This makes the new system less about handing an entire advertising campaign to AI and more about combining advertiser instructions with automated optimisation.
Does AI Max guarantee more sales?
No.
Google reports performance improvements from AI Max, but those figures are based on Google’s own internal data and should not be treated as a guarantee for an individual Nigerian business.
Google’s documentation says advertisers activating AI Max typically saw 14 per cent more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA/ROAS in its 2025 internal data for non-retail advertisers.
Google later reported a 7 per cent average increase in conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA/ROAS for the full AI Max feature suite compared with search-term matching alone, based on 2026 internal data for non-retail advertisers.
Those figures are not Nigeria-specific.
That distinction matters for Nigerian businesses because advertising performance can vary according to competition, industry, customer behaviour, budget, website quality and campaign objectives.
Why is Google introducing this now?
The change reflects a broader shift in how people use Search.
Google says users are increasingly making longer and more detailed searches and using voice and images to find information.
The company said searches conducted through AI Mode are three times longer than traditional searches, while one in six searches is conducted through voice or images.
That creates a problem for conventional keyword-based advertising: businesses cannot manually anticipate every way a potential customer might phrase a search.
AI Max is Google’s response to that problem.
What does this mean for Nigerian businesses?
For Nigerian businesses already spending on Google Search advertising, the important change is the growing amount of automation available inside campaigns.
The new reporting tools could make it easier to understand the relationship between a customer’s search, the advert they receive and the page they visit.
AI Brief, meanwhile, is intended to make it easier to communicate campaign instructions to Google’s AI without relying entirely on technical settings.
Google is also positioning the tools ahead of the year’s major shopping period.
With Black Friday scheduled for November 27 and the festive shopping season following soon after, Balogun urged businesses to begin preparing their peak-season campaigns early.
For businesses considering Google advertising for the first time, however, AI Max should not be confused with a free advertising service. It is an AI-powered layer within Google Ads; the advertising itself still requires a campaign budget.
The bigger change is that businesses are increasingly being given the ability to tell Google’s advertising system what they want in ordinary language and then allow AI to determine how best to reach relevant search users.
