Amaechi will run alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, forming what party leaders describe as a broad-based “unity and rescue ticket” designed to reposition the party ahead of the next national polls.
A Ticket Framed as National Reconciliation and Experience
The announcement was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, following what he described as extensive consultations within the party structure and coalition partners across the country.
According to the ADC, Amaechi’s selection was influenced by his performance in the party’s presidential primary, where he reportedly emerged as runner-up, as well as his long-standing record in public service at both state and federal levels.
Party officials argue that the pairing of Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi represents a strategic blend of political experience, administrative competence, and national reach.
From Rivers Assembly to National Politics
Amaechi’s political career spans decades and multiple tiers of governance. He previously served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, a role that positioned him as one of the most influential legislative figures in the South-South region during his tenure.
He later went on to serve two terms as Governor of Rivers State, where he oversaw major infrastructure expansion efforts and reforms in education and public administration. At the federal level, he served as Minister of Transportation, where he was closely associated with large-scale rail and transport modernization projects.
The ADC says this combination of legislative, executive, and federal experience makes him a strong complement to Atiku Abubakar’s national political profile.
Party Positions Ticket as “National Coalition”
In its official statement, the party described the decision as part of a wider effort to build a coalition that cuts across regions, generations, and political traditions.
The ADC stated that the joint ticket reflects a shared ambition to address Nigeria’s governance challenges, including economic instability, insecurity, and unemployment.
Party leadership also emphasized that the selection process involved consultations with stakeholders across geopolitical zones, youth groups, women’s organizations, and coalition partners.
Political Strategy Ahead of 2027
Analysts view the move as an attempt by the ADC to consolidate opposition strength ahead of the 2027 elections by bringing together high-profile political figures with national recognition.
The party believes that the combination of Atiku Abubakar’s long-standing national political presence and Rotimi Amaechi’s influence in southern Nigeria could strengthen its competitiveness against the ruling establishment.
ADC Calls for Wider Support Base
The party has called on members, supporters, civil society actors, and undecided voters to rally behind the emerging alliance, framing it as a project aimed at national renewal and institutional reform.
According to the statement, the coalition’s goal is to restore public confidence in governance and create what it describes as a more stable and prosperous Nigeria.
