The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Olumode Adeyemi, has unveiled a new Medical Intervention Scheme and an increase in the Service’s interest-free loan facility for personnel from N300,000 to N500,000.
Adeyemi announced the measures on Tuesday during the inauguration of a Quarter Guard at the Federal Fire Service National Headquarters in Wuse, Abuja, describing staff welfare as a central focus of his administration since assuming office about a year ago.
According to the Controller-General, the Medical Intervention Scheme was introduced to ease the financial burden of healthcare for officers and men of the Service by subsidising medical expenses.
He also announced the expansion of the Service’s interest-free loan scheme, increasing the maximum amount available to personnel from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000.
Adeyemi said the welfare reforms have significantly improved morale among firefighters nationwide, citing the voluntary construction of the newly inaugurated Quarter Guard by officers without any directive from the leadership.
He described the gesture as evidence of renewed confidence in the Service’s leadership and institutional direction.
The Controller-General also revealed that he declined a planned grand reception organised in his honour by friends in Nigeria and abroad after his appointment, choosing instead to redirect the funds towards welfare projects for firefighters. According to him, the money was used to purchase mattresses and other essential items for personnel across the country.
The Federal Fire Service has faced longstanding concerns over the welfare of its personnel, who routinely operate in hazardous environments while contending with limited access to healthcare support and financial assistance.
The latest initiatives form part of broader efforts by the Service’s leadership to strengthen employee welfare, improve motivation and enhance institutional commitment among its workforce.
