Lagos Fanti Carnival

The Lagos Fanti Carnival is one of the most vibrant cultural celebrations in Lagos, rooted in the history of Afro-Brazilian returnees who settled in the city in the 19th century after the transatlantic slave trade.

These returnees brought with them elements of Brazilian culture—music, dance, fashion, and religious influences which over time blended with local Nigerian traditions to form a unique cultural expression.

The carnival is marked by colorful street parades, elaborate costumes, masquerades, and high-energy performances featuring samba-influenced rhythms alongside African drumming and contemporary sounds. Typically held on Lagos Island, particularly in areas like the historic Brazilian Quarters, the event serves as both a celebration of identity and a preservation of heritage, highlighting the enduring cultural and historical links between West Africa and the Americas.

Today, the Lagos Fanti Carnival stands not only as a symbol of cultural fusion and resilience but also as a growing attraction for tourism and a reflection of Lagos’s longstanding role as a cosmopolitan center.
