Match Report

Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah scored twice in three minutes to ensure a Liverpool victory at Anfield. Brighton who lost to Liverpool earlier this week in their Carabao Cup encounter began the match with all cylinders firing. They dominated the early stages of the game.

Kadioglu provided the breakthrough goal in the match. Brighton attacked in numbers with Kadioglu moving the ball out to Mitoma. Whose cross wasn’t cleared properly and the Turkish international swiped a fantastic strike from a tight angle into the far corner. The goal involved 21 passes before he put his side into the lead with just 13 minutes played.

The visitors continued to trouble Liverpool, who struggled to find their footing as Brighton tested their back four. The seagulls created several great chances in the first half which required Caoimhin Kelleher to work hard to keep the scoreline 0-1. Liverpool had their best attack of the first half very late. Unfortunately, it resulted in Ibrahima Konate falling heavily and sustaining an injury. He was substituted during the break.

The second half witnessed a more proactive Liverpool team attacking more aggressively. Slot’s in-game tactical changes resulted in Liverpool attacking in a 4-4-2 formation led by Salah and Gakpo. The sustained pressure saw Brighton be more defensive and Liverpool getting their first goal. Gakpo struck a loopy ball from the left which hoodwinked the defense to bounce in for a goal. Nunez also played his role perfectly to let the ball through while distracting the center backs.

It only took two minutes after the first goal for Salah to burst through Brighton’s defense to score Liverpool’s second goal. It was a swift counter that put Salah in a 1-v-1 position with Estupinan. He cut inside to create space for a sensational strike that found the back of the net.

The win ensured Arne Slot’s team was at the top of the Premier League table due to Manchester City and Arsenal losing their respective matches. On the other hand,  Brighton’s defeat denied them a top-four position in the league standings.
