Manchester City had the opportunity to extend their points gap to title rivals Arsenal with a win today. Instead, Bournemouth played sensational football to achieve the upset of the weekend. Manchester City lost their first match of the 2024/25 season giving Liverpool a chance to extend their lead at the league table by two points.
Bournemouth started the match in top gear, attacking City intensely. Within two minutes, Ederson was forced into a double save to deny Semenyo and then Justin Kluivert from the follow-up strikes. Bournemouth kept the aggression going and was rewarded with a goal in the 9th minute. Milos Kerkez sprinted down the left flank before reaching the byline and pulled the ball across the six-yard box. Antoine Semenyo received it with his back to the goal, got the better of Josko Gvardiol, and found the bottom right corner!
Manchester City struggled to find their footing in the first half and ended it without a shot on target. The hosts on the other hand almost doubled their lead at the start of the second half thanks to Evanilson. Ederson prevented it the first time but Evanilson got the better of him the next time. Kerkez delivered another perfect assist from the left and Evanilson made contact early to divert it past Ederson, who barely moved. The home fans went crazy celebrating as the scoreline read 2-0.

Josko Gvardiol brought City back into the game when his header to an Ilkay Gundogan cross found the back of the net. The Man City goal set up a tense final ending of the game. As City pushed hard to score the equaliser. Alas despite Doku’s best efforts and Haaland’s big chances, City failed and ended up losing the match.
Pep Guardiola would be unhappy about the loss as City have handed back their lead to Liverpool. Thankfully Arsenal also suffered a loss earlier today thus City still retains the second spot in the league table. Bournemouth and Andoni Iraola would be ecstatic with their win as they are now in eighth place.
