Google Pledges $15 Billion to Launch AI Hub in India

Google on Tuesday announced it will invest $15 billion over the next five years to build a major artificial intelligence hub in India. The move underscores India’s growing importance in global tech development and signals Google’s commitment to supporting the country’s digital ambitions.

The AI centre will be located in Visakhapatnam, a coastal city in India’s southern region, and is set to become one of Google’s most significant facilities worldwide. The campus is expected to include:

  • Gigawatt-scale data centre infrastructure

  • Upgraded energy systems

  • An interlinked fiber-optic network

  • A new international subsea cable gateway connecting to Google’s global network of terrestrial and undersea conduits

According to Google, the investment will not only support India’s local tech ecosystem but also bolster its role in global AI innovation.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai remarked that the hub would “bring industry-leading technology to Indian enterprises and users, accelerating AI innovation and fueling growth across the country.”

The proposal follows discussions between Pichai and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed strong support for the plan.

Modi described the investment as a force for democratizing technology, stating it would help provide advanced AI tools to citizens, strengthen India’s digital economy, and cement the country’s status as a global technology leader.

Local collaboration is part of the strategy: conglomerate Adani Group has joined forces with Google to support development of the hub, leveraging its footprint in infrastructure and energy.

This announcement marks a major milestone in India’s digital transformation journey. With Google’s financial backing and technical resources, the hub could become a significant node in AI development globally, while helping India scale innovation, employment, and technology access.
