Germany Warns Nigerians Against Visa Agents, Says No One Can Guarantee Approval

The German Embassy in Nigeria has warned visa applicants against paying agents or intermediaries who promise guaranteed visa approvals, secured jobs or faster appointment slots, stressing that all applications are subject to official assessment.

In advisories published on its official X account on Wednesday, October 21, the German Missions in Abuja and Lagos said they do not work with visa agents and urged Nigerians to rely exclusively on official government channels for visa information and application procedures.

“We do not work with any ‘Visa Agents’!” the embassy stated, adding that information on visa requirements, appointments and procedures is freely available on its website.

The warning comes amid concerns over fraudulent intermediaries who reportedly collect large sums of money from applicants in exchange for promises of employment opportunities, visa approvals or privileged access to embassy appointments.

The embassy said visa decisions rest solely with the relevant German authorities and depend on applicants meeting the requirements for their visa category, supported by the necessary documentation. Payments to third parties cannot guarantee a favourable decision.

Applicants warned against job and visa scams

The German Missions said they had received reports from applicants who paid substantial fees to agents promising jobs and visas, only to discover that the offers were false.

Applicants were advised to be cautious of individuals claiming to have special connections at the embassy or the ability to influence consular decisions.

The embassy also stressed that booking an appointment through the official system is free, warning Nigerians against paying agents simply to secure an appointment slot.

The advisory is part of efforts by German authorities to protect prospective travellers from financial losses and misinformation surrounding visa applications.

Embassy clarifies official application procedures

The German Missions also cautioned applicants against sending documents by email in an attempt to obtain appointments or relying on unofficial advice about the Consular Services Portal.

According to the embassy, the portal currently applies only to certain categories of long-stay national visas, meaning applicants must first establish the correct procedure for their intended travel.

Nigerians seeking to travel to Germany were advised to verify the requirements for their specific visa category and use official government platforms for information and applications.
