#EndSARS: It’s the Dawn of Accountable Governance: Oladoyin Taiwo, Social Media Strategy Consultant

Oladoyin Taiwo

#EndSARS means the beginning of a new Nigeria where the citizens have a voice and can demand accountability from the government for their actions or inactions. It means the birth of a new nation where we can get justice for the misbehavior of law enforcement agencies across the country. It means bringing an end to police brutality in Nigeria so that the killing of innocent citizens will STOP! It means a safe and sane country for my children and their children to live in if they choose to without fearing for their lives.

Beyond that, it means once we crack this particular issue of brutal and extortionate policing, we can begin to place demands on the government for accountability in other areas that have been in the state of decadence since I was born 35 years ago. From quality education to excellent health care amenities to be put in place to good roads to constant power supply amongst others.

#EndSARS should basically change Nigeria to a country where leaders have their citizens’ interest at heart and serve them in the best capacity to help Nigeria become all that it possesses the potential to be. Where due process is followed everywhere and integrity and hard work is rewarded.

How can we all build on #EndSARS to transform Nigeria into a country that works for all of us and not a few of them? The youth should follow the money; monitor keenly to see that government expenditure is being used to reduce the shamefully wide social and economic disparity that exists in the society right now. Government spending must focus on creating an enabling environment, wherein individuals can live freely and attain their highest potential to become all they can be in a country where things work.

#EndSARS is unprecedented moment in Nigerian history. What does it mean to you? What do you want it to change? How can we ALL build on it in transforming Nigeria into a country that works for ALL of us and not only for a few of them?
