Chris Piwuna: New ASUU President Looking to Carry on Emmanuel Osodeke’s Struggle

Professor Chris Piwuna

Professor Christopher Goson Piwuna, a professor of Medicine at the University of Jos, Plateau state was recently elected to replace Professor Emmanuel Osodeke as chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) following the latter’s reign between 2021 and 2025 .

He is no stranger to the union’s affairs, having served as the union’s vice president  under prof. Osodeke.

About The New ASUU President

Prof. Piwuna is a Nigerian academic and consultant psychiatrist at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). A Professor of Medicine at the University of Jos, he also serves as the Dean of Student Affairs of the university.

He holds an MBBS degree from the University of Jos (2000), an MSc in Geriatrics and Gerontology from the University of Malta (2013), and is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) since 2008.

His research focuses on the quality of life in older adults, and he is a member of the International Psychogeriatric Association. Before becoming president.

His election as ASUU president was confirmed at the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held at the University of Benin, Edo State, where he defeated Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi . He is knownadvocate for the welfare of university lecturers and reforms in Nigeria’s higher education sector.

He would therefore be seeking to continue the advocacy for better lecturer welfare from where Prof. Osodeke stopped.
