In a significant turn of events, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has officially withdrawn the highly contentious Counter Subversion Bill.
The move comes after mounting public backlash and extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the nation.
The decision was announced on Wednesday in Abuja by the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, who emphasised that the withdrawal underscores Abbas’s deep commitment to the people’s will and the nation’s unity.
“Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, a steadfast advocate for the interests of the people, has consistently prioritised listening to citizens and promoting national cohesion,” the statement read.
“His decision to withdraw the Counter-Subversion Bill reflects his unwavering dedication to ensuring that the House of Representatives remains a true representation of the people’s voice,” it added.
“The Speaker acknowledged the widespread concerns that the bill had sparked, reaffirming his stance against any legislative action that could threaten the peace and unity of Nigeria. The public is hereby informed that the Counter-Subversion Bill, along with related legislation introduced on July 23, 2024, has been formally withdrawn from consideration.”
