Tinubu Marks Three Years in Office With New Projects as Nigerians React to Economic Hardship, Insecurity

Nigerians React to Rising Hardship and Insecurity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday marked the third anniversary of his administration by commissioning multiple projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, while many Nigerians on social media expressed mixed reactions over the state of the economy and national security.

In a message released on May 29, Tinubu said his administration had taken “difficult but necessary” decisions aimed at rebuilding the Nigerian economy and laying the foundation for long-term recovery.

“Today, the signs of recovery, resilience, and renewal are visible across our country,” the president stated.

As part of activities ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, the Federal Government commissioned more than twenty strategic projects in energy, healthcare, enterprise development, education, and public infrastructure.

Among the projects unveiled were several compressed natural gas (CNG) facilities under the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund.

The projects include a CNG refuelling station at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri; a major gas station in Ojota, Lagos, with an extension in Abuja; and multiple gas infrastructure projects spread across Kaduna, Kano, Borno, and Lagos State.

According to the presidency, the projects are expected to reduce transportation costs, encourage cleaner energy usage, and improve Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.

In the health sector, the administration commissioned thirteen projects nationwide, including new facilities at federal teaching hospitals in Abuja, Zaria, Bauchi, Maiduguri, Enugu, and Uyo.

The government also unveiled emergency operation centres in Kano, Sokoto, and Katsina, alongside a new vaccine hub in Lagos and a fleet of ambulances for federal hospitals.

Tinubu said nearly 3,000 primary healthcare centres had also been revitalised under the government’s IMPACT programme over the past two years.

“These projects are not ceremonial symbols.

They are evidence that the Renewed Hope Agenda is being felt in homes, businesses, schools and hospitals across our federation,” he said.

However, reactions from Nigerians online showed that many citizens remain unconvinced about the administration’s overall performance.

Several users on X criticised the government over rising inflation, worsening insecurity, unemployment, and the increasing cost of living.

One user, identified as @SonOf_Africanss, accused the administration of failing Nigerians despite ongoing infrastructure projects.

“The insecurity has increased.

The hunger has increased. Inflation has increased,” the user wrote, adding that electricity supply remains unstable despite government promises.

Another user, @Edidem_greek, questioned the value of commissioning ambulances and healthcare facilities while insecurity continues to affect families and schoolchildren across the country.

“You’re commissioning CNG stations, vaccine hubs, and ambulance fleets. Great. But what good is a new ambulance when parents are afraid to send their children to school?” the user posted.

Other Nigerians also criticised the administration’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and exchange rate changes, which many believe contributed to rising living costs nationwide.

Despite the criticism, some supporters of the administration argue that Tinubu’s government has made visible progress in infrastructure, healthcare expansion, and energy development within three years.

Political observers say the administration’s reforms remain deeply divisive, with supporters describing them as painful but necessary, while critics argue that ordinary Nigerians are yet to feel meaningful economic relief.

Tinubu said his administration would present a full performance scorecard during the June 12 Democracy Day celebration.

“The work continues. The reforms continue. And our resolve remains unshaken,” the president said.
