The long-awaited all-British heavyweight contest has been confirmed for Wales after months of uncertainty over the venue and negotiations surrounding one of boxing’s most anticipated fights.
Fury, 37, and Joshua, 36, both completed comeback fights in July, clearing the latest sporting hurdle before their meeting.
Fury stopped 46-year-old Mariusz Wach in the seventh round in Pattaya, Thailand, in a fight staged before a crowd of about 1,500 spectators and not shown on television.
Joshua’s return was considerably more difficult. The former unified heavyweight champion was knocked down twice in the opening round by Albania’s Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, before recovering to stop him in the second round.
The fight was Joshua’s first since a road crash in Nigeria in December 2025 that killed his close friends Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.
Cardiff wins the battle for Fury-Joshua
The decision to stage the fight in Cardiff ends a prolonged debate over where the contest would take place.
Wembley Stadium had been Joshua and promoter Eddie Hearn’s preferred venue, while New York’s Madison Square Garden had emerged as a serious alternative during negotiations.
A move to the United States would, however, have required changes to Joshua’s agreement with the Saudi-backed organisers financing the event. The existing arrangement called for the fight to be staged in Britain.
Hearn had repeatedly argued that the contest should return to Britain, where both fighters built much of their careers and where demand for the matchup has remained high.
Speaking after Pat Brown’s victory over John Hedges on 19 September, Hearn described the Fury fight as central to the next stage of Joshua’s career.
“There is a desperation to win this fight,” Hearn said, describing it as a contest he had never wanted to win more.
A fight years in the making
Fury-Joshua has been discussed for years, with several attempts to make the fight collapsing at different stages.
The two camps reached agreement in principle on a two-fight deal in 2020. A year later, an undisputed heavyweight contest appeared close to completion before Deontay Wilder’s successful arbitration case forced Fury into a third fight with the American.
Another attempt followed in 2022, when Joshua accepted a proposed 60-40 split to fight Fury. That negotiation also failed to produce the bout.
The latest round of negotiations again appeared uncertain, with different venues and dates repeatedly discussed.
Fury had even revived talk of a potential trilogy with Oleksandr Usyk shortly before the Fury-Joshua announcement, adding to uncertainty over whether the British heavyweight showdown would actually happen.
The Cardiff agreement finally settles the immediate question.
Why the British venue matters
The Principality Stadium will give the fight a home-country setting after years in which Saudi Arabia and the United States featured prominently in discussions about its location.
For Joshua, the British venue also avoids the need to renegotiate the existing arrangements around staging the fight outside the UK.
The contest will bring two of Britain’s most recognisable heavyweight boxers together at a time when both are attempting to extend their careers at the top level.
Fury has held the WBC heavyweight title and previously became the undisputed heavyweight champion before relinquishing his belts. Joshua has held the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles during his career.
Their records have developed along different paths, but the rivalry between the two has endured despite repeated failed negotiations.
December showdown closes another chapter
The confirmation in Cardiff turns what has been a decade-long boxing storyline into a scheduled fight.
For British boxing fans, the contest will also provide the opportunity to see two of the country’s biggest heavyweight names share a ring on home soil.
The fight is scheduled for 11 December at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
