The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to American citizens ahead of a planned protest by retired Nigerian military personnel over unpaid or unmet pension adjustments.
The protest is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, and is expected to take place around the Ministry of Defence in Abuja. The embassy said the demonstration could lead to traffic congestion and temporary restrictions on movement along Olusegun Obasanjo Way and adjoining roads, depending on the size of the gathering.
The advisory, issued on Tuesday, urged Americans to avoid the protest area, use alternative routes and exercise caution around large gatherings. The embassy said the demonstration is expected to be peaceful but warned that large gatherings can become unpredictable, with the possibility of confrontations involving protesters, counter-protesters or security personnel.
“Retired Nigerian military personnel are reportedly planning to protest regarding unmet pension adjustments,” the embassy said in its alert. It added that the protest could disrupt traffic and movement around the Ministry of Defence.
The US mission advised Americans who encounter the demonstration to leave the area or return home, while also urging them to monitor local media for updates and remain aware of their surroundings.
The embassy further advised US citizens in Abuja to keep a low profile, carry proper identification, keep their phones charged and review their personal security plans. The Consular Section in Abuja and the US Consulate General in Lagos remain open, according to the advisory.
The warning comes amid continued concerns over demonstrations and public gatherings in Abuja. In March 2026, the US Mission had similarly advised Americans to remain indoors and avoid protest areas following concerns about demonstrations linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
