Sebastián Beccacece Steps Down as Ecuador Coach After World Cup Elimination

Sebastián Beccacece has confirmed his departure as Ecuador’s head coach after the South American side’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the Round of 32.

Speaking after the match at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, the Argentine coach revealed that his contract expired at the conclusion of Ecuador’s World Cup participation, bringing an end to his tenure with the national team.

The announcement came shortly after Ecuador were knocked out by a disciplined Mexican side that capitalised on a dominant first-half display before successfully protecting their lead throughout the second half.

Beccacece Reflects on Unfulfilled World Cup Ambitions

Beccacece admitted he had hoped to remain in charge but accepted that the team’s inability to meet its objectives made his departure inevitable.

The coach said Ecuador had entered the tournament with ambitious goals and a desire to produce the nation’s finest World Cup campaign, but acknowledged that those expectations were ultimately not achieved.

While expressing disappointment at leaving the role, he thanked both the Ecuadorian Football Federation and his players for the confidence and support they showed throughout his spell in charge.

Mexico’s Strong Start Proved Decisive

Ecuador struggled to cope with Mexico’s intensity during the opening 45 minutes, conceding twice before halftime as the hosts seized control of the contest.

Although Beccacece’s side improved significantly after the break and enjoyed more possession, they were unable to find the breakthrough needed to spark a comeback against one of the tournament’s most organised defensive teams.

The coach acknowledged that his players were second best during the first half but praised their response after the interval despite their inability to overturn the deficit.

Ecuador’s Young Squad Earns Praise

Rather than focusing on his own contribution, Beccacece credited Ecuador’s players for what he believes will be the lasting legacy of the campaign.

He highlighted the youthful nature of the squad, describing it as one of the youngest groups Ecuador has taken to a World Cup, and expressed confidence that the experience gained at the tournament would benefit the national team in the years ahead.

The Argentine also revealed that he shared an emotional farewell with the players after the match, describing the time spent together following the defeat as one of the most meaningful moments of his tenure.

Ecuador’s Tournament Ends After Promising Revival

Ecuador had entered the knockout stage with growing confidence after producing one of the surprises of the tournament by coming from behind to defeat Germany in the group phase.

That victory raised hopes of an extended World Cup run, but those ambitions were ended by Mexico, whose energetic performance and defensive discipline secured a place in the last 16 while bringing Ecuador’s campaign to a close.

Beccacece now departs having guided a youthful Ecuadorian side through a period of transition, leaving questions over who will lead the team into the next cycle of international competitions.
