Co-hosts Mexico Defeat South Africa in World Cup Opener

Mexico defeated South Africa by 2 goals to nil in the 2026 FIFA world cup opener following goals from Joseph Quinones and Raul Jimenez.

Mexico who were backed by a full Azecta stadium took the lead in the 7th minute after Al-Qadsiah winger Quinones capitalized on a defensive error by South Africa.

South Africa’s day went from bad to worse when defender sithole received a red card in the first half before another red card in the second half put the game well beyond the South Africans.

Mexico also received a red card in the second half but were able to see out the win.
