Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor Taiwo Adeshina, widely known by his stage name Elegbeje Ado, has died after a brief illness, marking the end of a career that spanned more than two decades in Nigeria’s indigenous film industry.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday by fellow Nollywood actor Kunle Afod, who paid tribute to the late actor in an Instagram post.
Afod described Adeshina as one of the legends of the Yoruba movie industry, praising his immense contributions to the growth of Yoruba cinema and the memorable performances that endeared him to audiences.
“Your immense contribution to the growth of Yoruba cinema, your talent, and the joy you brought to countless lives will never be forgotten. Thank you for the beautiful memories and the legacy you left behind,” Afod wrote.
According to reports, Adeshina died on Monday, June 29, following a brief illness, although the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed.
Storied Acting Career
Adeshina earned widespread recognition for portraying traditional rulers, community elders, and other culturally significant characters in Yoruba-language films. His nickname, “Elegbeje Ado,” originated from one of his most acclaimed movie roles, which became synonymous with his career and remained his identity throughout his years in the industry.
Beyond acting, Adeshina was also a Christian minister, balancing his pastoral responsibilities with his career in entertainment.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans, who have celebrated his lasting impact on Yoruba cinema and his contribution to preserving indigenous storytelling through film.
