On Wednesday night, a tragic mid-air collision involving an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter occurred near Washington, D.C. Both aircraft plummeted into the Potomac River, leading to a significant loss of life. Among the passengers were former world champion figure skaters Yevgenia Shishkova, 53, and Vadim Naumov, 56. The married couple, who clinched the pairs title at the 1994 World Figure Skating Championships, had resided in the United States since 1998, dedicating their time to coaching young skaters.

The ill-fated flight was returning from Wichita, Kansas, where the National Development Camp was held alongside the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Shishkova and Naumov were traveling with a group of young skaters. Their son, Maxim Naumov, 23, a prominent skater for Team USA, was not on the flight, having departed Wichita earlier.

The collision, which occurred around 9 p.m. ET as the passenger jet approached Reagan National Airport, has raised concerns about air traffic control and collision-avoidance systems in the congested airspace near the U.S. capital. A massive search and rescue operation was launched, but efforts were hampered by near-freezing temperatures and darkness. Authorities have not confirmed the exact number of fatalities but have indicated that there may be no survivors.

U.S. Figure Skating released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families. The Kremlin also conveyed sympathies to the families of the Russian citizens who perished in the crash.

The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing, with officials seeking to understand how such a disaster could occur in a heavily monitored airspace.

Vadim Naumov and Yevgenia Shishkova were a distinguished Russian figure skating pair, celebrated for their remarkable achievements on the ice.
