Saudi Doctor Jailed for Life Over Fatal Christmas Market Attack in Germany

Court Finds Psychiatrist Guilty in Attack That Killed Six and Injured Hundreds

A German court has sentenced a Saudi national to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of carrying out a deadly vehicle attack at a Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg in December 2024.

The convicted man, identified by German authorities as Taleb A. under the country’s privacy laws, drove a rented BMW into crowds gathered at the festive market just days before Christmas. The attack claimed six lives and left hundreds of others injured.

Victims Included Women and a Young Child

Among those killed were five women between the ages of 45 and 75, along with a nine-year-old boy.

Prosecutors said the incident unfolded in just over one minute, causing widespread panic as the vehicle ploughed through the crowded market.

The tragedy quickly became one of Germany’s deadliest public attacks in recent years.

Investigation Found Weeks of Planning

During the trial, prosecutors argued that the attack had been carefully prepared over several weeks.

They charged the defendant with six counts of murder and hundreds of attempted murder charges linked to the victims who survived the assault.

Authorities maintained that the attacker acted alone and found no evidence of a broader network or accomplices.

Motive Linked to Personal Grievances

According to prosecutors, the defendant’s actions were driven by frustration over the outcome of a civil legal dispute and repeated failures in criminal complaints he had previously filed.

Investigators said those personal grievances, rather than an organized extremist plot, appeared to have motivated the attack.

Suspect Had History of Anti-Islamic and Far-Right Views

German officials described the convicted man as a psychiatrist originally from Saudi Arabia who had publicly expressed anti-Islamic views and sympathies toward far-right ideology.

His background and public statements drew significant attention during the investigation and trial.

Attack Sparked Political Debate

The Christmas market attack shocked Germany and reignited nationwide debate over immigration and public security.
