Argentina captain Lionel Messi has sparked fresh concerns over his fitness ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup after being substituted during Inter Miami CF’s Major League Soccer encounter against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
The veteran forward was taken off in the 73rd minute after appearing uncomfortable and clutching the back of his left leg during the match played under difficult wet conditions in Miami.
Despite the scare, Messi was able to walk off the pitch without assistance before heading directly to the dressing room, suggesting the issue may not be severe.

Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos later downplayed fears of a serious injury, explaining that the substitution was mainly a precautionary measure.
According to the coach, Messi showed signs of fatigue during the game, especially with the heavy playing surface, prompting the technical crew to avoid taking unnecessary risks.
The 38-year-old football icon has not officially confirmed whether he will feature for Argentina national football team at the forthcoming World Cup, although expectations remain high that he will participate in what could become his sixth appearance at the global tournament — a feat that would match the competition’s all-time appearance record.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has carefully managed his playing schedule due to recurring fitness concerns, particularly hamstring-related issues that have occasionally sidelined him.
Argentina’s coaching staff are expected to continue monitoring his condition closely before finalising the squad for the tournament.
