Meghan Markle Eyes Acting Comeback as Sussexes Prepare for Return to UK

Meghan Markle’s return to Britain may also mark a return to the profession that made her famous.

The Duchess of Sussex is reportedly considering an acting role in a UK-based production as she and Prince Harry prepare to relocate to Britain for an extended period.

The project has not been publicly identified, and neither the Sussexes nor the production involved has announced casting details. But sources close to the couple have not denied the report, according to Variety.

The timing has made the acting story more consequential than a conventional celebrity casting report. The couple’s planned return to Britain, announced this week after six years in California, already represents a reversal of one of the defining decisions of their post-royal life.

Meghan potentially working again in Britain adds a professional dimension to that move.

From Suits to the Royal Family

Before becoming one of the world’s most recognisable royal figures, Meghan built her career in television, most notably as Rachel Zane on the legal drama Suits.

She joined the series in 2011 and played Rachel for its first seven seasons. The character’s storyline culminated in a marriage to Mike Ross, played by Patrick J. Adams, before the pair left the fictional New York legal world.

Meghan’s departure from acting coincided with her relationship with Harry becoming public. The couple married at Windsor Castle in May 2018, after which her career shifted from scripted television to royal duties and, later, commercial and media projects.

That makes a sustained return to acting a different proposition from the occasional on-camera appearance she has made since leaving Suits.

Her Screen Return Has Already Begun

The reported British role would not technically be Meghan’s first acting appearance since her royal career began.

In 2025, she agreed to a cameo in Amazon MGM’s Close Personal Friends, a comedy starring Brie Larson, Lily Collins, Jack Quaid and Henry Golding. Variety confirmed at the time that Meghan had a small role in the film, which was shooting around Los Angeles.

The cameo was widely viewed as a cautious re-entry rather than a full-scale return to acting. It was also unusually self-referential: reports said Meghan appeared as herself.

The distinction matters. A full role in a British production would put her back into the normal machinery of scripted entertainment — auditions, production schedules, promotion and the commercial judgement of studios and producers — rather than simply extending the Sussexes’ existing media brand.

Why Britain Changes the Equation

The reported project comes as Meghan and Harry prepare to spend an extended period in Britain with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

The children are expected to begin school in Britain in September, while the family will live in a private, non-royal residence outside London. The couple are expected to retain their Montecito home and continue operating their private businesses rather than returning to royal duties.

That arrangement reflects the unusual position the Sussexes have occupied since leaving royal duties.

They are returning to the country where Harry remains a member of the royal family while explicitly remaining outside the working monarchy.

The distinction was established when the couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020. Buckingham Palace said at the time that they would no longer undertake official royal duties or receive public funds for those duties.

Their return therefore does not amount to a restoration of their former roles. It is a return to Britain as private individuals — with the added complication that virtually everything they do remains of public interest.

Harry’s Security Dispute Still Hangs Over the Return

One unresolved issue is security.

Harry has spent years challenging the British government’s decision to change the level of publicly funded police protection available to him and his family following his change in royal status.

In May 2025, the Court of Appeal upheld the earlier decision rejecting his challenge to the arrangements determined by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, known as RAVEC. The case concerned the reduced level of publicly funded personal protective security provided to Harry when in Britain.

The issue is particularly relevant now because the Sussexes are no longer discussing Britain solely as a place for short visits. Their children are expected to attend school there, while Meghan could potentially work there.

That creates a more sustained relationship with the country than the family’s previous pattern of brief visits.

A Different Career for Meghan

Meghan’s professional life since leaving royal duties has largely centred on production, lifestyle media and commercial ventures rather than acting.

She and Harry have built a media operation through their Archewell production interests, while Meghan launched the lifestyle brand As Ever and fronted the Netflix series With Love, Meghan. She has also appeared in other television projects, including as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia, according to Variety.

An acting comeback would therefore represent a shift within a career that has increasingly positioned Meghan as a producer, entrepreneur and media personality rather than simply an actress.

It could also test whether the enormous public attention surrounding her private life can be converted into conventional entertainment work without overwhelming the project itself.

The Role Remains Unconfirmed

For now, the central detail is still missing: the production.

Neither the title of the project nor the character Meghan would play has been publicly disclosed. Reports originating with Australian media have described the offer as a UK-based production, while British outlets have independently reported the claim.

Variety has confirmed that Meghan is considering a return to the screen but has not identified the project.

That leaves a substantial difference between an offer and a completed comeback.

What is clearer is the broader direction. Meghan has already tested the screen again after years away, and the Sussexes are now preparing to spend much more time in Britain. If the reported role proceeds, the two developments could turn what initially looked like a temporary family relocation into a new professional chapter for the Duchess.

For a woman whose acting career ended when she entered the royal family, Britain may now become the place where it begins again.
