In a bold move to break gender barriers and empower women in the construction industry, Lafarge Africa Plc has launched its 2024 Female Tilers and Block Laying Training Programme. The initiative, which commenced on Tuesday at Nawair Ud Deen High School in Ebute Metta, Lagos, aims to provide 40 women from low-income communities with essential construction skills.
This four-week intensive training programme, a brainchild of Lafarge Africa, a leading provider of innovative and sustainable building solutions, is tailored to equip women with the practical skills required in the traditionally male-dominated construction sector. Participants will receive hands-on training in tiling and block laying, skills that are in high demand across the country.
Viola Graham-Douglas, the Director of Communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainable Development at Lafarge Africa Plc, emphasised the company’s commitment to promoting gender equality through this initiative.

“I am proud of what we are doing as an organisation in empowering the women in our communities. Stereotypes around jobs or vocational skills no longer exist as we build an equitable world for all. It is important that we give women the support they require to thrive and succeed,” Graham-Douglas said.
Her statement reflects the organisation’s broader mission to create an inclusive environment where women can thrive in various career paths, including those traditionally dominated by men.
Mentorship and Ongoing Support
The training programme is not just about imparting skills; it also focuses on mentorship and long-term support. Folarin Sukanmi Quadri, representing the Lagos State Tilers Association, praised Lafarge Africa’s commitment to the cause.
“First of all, I want to thank Lafarge Africa for organising this initiative and providing the trainees with mentors that will continue to support them after the programme,” Quadri remarked. This ongoing mentorship ensures that the trainees are not only skilled but also confident and ready to take on roles in the construction industry.
Owoeye Oluyemi, a Director in Construction and Technical Instructor from the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board, encouraged the participants to make the most of the training. “This opportunity provided by Lafarge Africa should be fully utilised. These are in-demand skills that will open up economic opportunities for you,” Oluyemi urged.
Beyond the core construction skills, the training programme also includes modules on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and digital marketing. These additional skills are designed to equip women with the knowledge to manage their finances, start their own businesses, and effectively market their services.
Upon completing the training, the participants will receive certificates and gain membership in the Block Makers and Tillers Association of Nigeria, further enhancing their professional credentials.
Commitment to Community Development
The Female Tilers and Block Making Training Programme is more than just a training initiative; it is a testament to Lafarge Africa’s ongoing commitment to community development, gender equality, and sustainable growth in Nigeria. As these 40 women embark on their training journey, they are not just learning a trade; they are paving the way for future generations of women in construction.
With initiatives like this, Lafarge Africa is not only contributing to the personal growth of individuals but also to the broader socio-economic development of Nigerian communities. This programme reflects the company’s dedication to creating a lasting impact, demonstrating that when women are empowered, entire communities can thrive.
