Football Wins: Cape Verde’s Heroic Goalkeeper Vozinha Set for Emotional Reunion With Mother

Following the match against Spain, the veteran goalkeeper broke down in tears as he revealed that his mother, Ana Candida Evora, had been unable to travel to the United States because of visa-related challenges

Football’s ability to create unforgettable moments beyond the pitch will be on full display this weekend as Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha prepares for an emotional reunion with his mother in the United States after a visa breakthrough brought an end to days of uncertainty.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper, whose real name is Josimar Dias, emerged as one of the standout stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after delivering a remarkable performance in Cape Verde’s historic 0-0 draw against Spain. His string of crucial saves helped the tournament debutants earn a memorable point against one of football’s traditional powerhouses and turned him into an overnight fan favourite.

Following the match against Spain, the veteran goalkeeper broke down in tears as he revealed that his mother, Ana Candida Evora, had been unable to travel to the United States because of visa-related challenges and the financial burden associated with the process. He said he wished she could have been present to witness one of the most significant moments of his career.

The emotional appeal quickly captured global attention, sparking widespread support from football fans and public figures alike.

US Officials Intervene

The situation prompted intervention from U.S. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who contacted U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and urged the State Department to assist with Evora’s travel arrangements. American officials subsequently confirmed they were working directly with her to secure the necessary documentation in time for Cape Verde’s next World Cup match.

Jeffries later announced that all applicable visa fees had been waived in accordance with existing policy and that arrangements were being made to ensure Evora could travel to Miami, where she is expected to reunite with her son ahead of Cape Verde’s Group H clash against Uruguay.

For Cape Verde, the reunion adds another uplifting chapter to an already inspiring World Cup campaign. Vozinha’s heroics against Spain made him a symbol of the small island nation’s resilience and determination, while the efforts to bring his mother to the tournament have become one of the competition’s most heartwarming stories.
