Ex super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu has passed on at the age of 74.
The ex-international affectionately called “Chairman” passed early on Saturday.
Announcing the ex-international’s demise, hos former international teammate Segun Odegbami Posted on X:
“My Chairman has passed on .
“I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and team mate, one of the greatest football players, former captain and coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has passed on.
“Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago!
“May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven, and console his family.”
The cause of his death is still unknown at the moment.
Career
Christian Chukwu captained the team that won Nigeria’s first afcon in 1980.
He would go on to coach the super Eagles from 2003 to 2005, leading them to reach semifinals at the 2004 African Cup of Nations
He was also an instrumental figure for Enugu rangers, first as a player and team captain in the 70s to early 80s and as a coach years later.
Earlier Struggles
News of his struggles first emerged years ago when it was claimed he had become an “abandoned old man”. However, the Enugu state government came out to deny that stating the ex-international’s was being taken care of.
