The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a vacancy for the position of Bilingual Editorial Assistant In Abuja, Nigeria.

About The Job

Under the direct supervision of the Bilingual/Trilingual Precis Writers Officer, the successful candidate will support the organization’s precis writers throughout all stages of the publication process. Key responsibilities include conducting in-depth research, assisting in writing, editing, and proofreading documents in multiple languages recognized by the Commission. The role also involves liaising closely with the Commission’s Revisors to ensure the consistent use of institutional jargon across all publications.

The Bilingual Editorial Assistant will ensure adherence to established Commission writing guidelines, maintain clarity and coherence in manuscripts, verify citations and bibliographies, and correct formatting errors. Additional duties include assisting editors and precis writers in various stages of the publication workflow and performing other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must possess a Brevet de Technicien (BT), National Diploma (ND), or an equivalent qualification in Languages, Translation, Writing/Editing, or a related field. A minimum of five years of experience in research, writing, editing, and proofreading is required. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in at least two of ECOWAS’s official languages — English, French, or Portuguese — and must be capable of basic translation between them.

Ideal applicants will have strong grammatical, lexical, and idiomatic skills, with a proven ability to draft, restructure, and post-edit written materials. Familiarity with artificial intelligence post-editing tools, including prompt generation and ChatGPT, is highly desirable, as are advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite and graphic design tools used for document preparation.

Applicants should also be experienced in formatting content for social media platforms and possess excellent research, editing, and proofreading skills. Strong time management, note-taking, and summarization abilities are essential.

Candidates must be under the age of 50 at the time of application, though internal candidates are exempt from this age restriction.

Salary Scale

Annual Salary:

  • UA 20,166.30 (approximately USD 31,818.39)

  • UA 25,527.53 (approximately USD 40,277.34)

  • UA 30,178.98 (approximately USD 47,616.39)

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent teamwork, cultural sensitivity, and a proactive approach to diversity and gender inclusion. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, commitment to ECOWAS values, and the ability to work effectively under pressure are essential. Knowledge of ECOWAS mandates, operational goals, and procedures is considered an advantage.

Proficiency in information and communication technologies, including the preparation of reports, newsletters, and web content, is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to allocate time efficiently to meet deadlines are critical.
