Criticisms trail Tinubu’s insistence he isn’t in office for personal gains

President Tinubu Claims He is Not Playing Politics of Personal Gains, Nigerians Not Buying It

A flurry of criticisms has trailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s insistence that he didn’t seek the office of the president merely for personal gains.

Backstory

Recent decisions by the Tinubu-led administration, including the purchase of a new multi-billion naira presidential jet amid economic hardship in the country, have been heavily criticized by Nigerians.

Scores of people have also accused the President of gross insensitivity, adding that his decisions in office aren’t suggestive of a caring leader.

According to Tinubu

However, speaking during a meeting with the Forum of Former Presiding Officers of the National Assembly, led by former Senate President Ken Nnamani, the President emphasised that he is not in office for personal gain but to genuinely serve the country.

In a statement released by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, the president assured Nigerians of his commitment to bring about tangible developments in the country.

The president said, “I didn’t come to look for money and exploit the situation; I came to work. I asked for the votes, and Nigerians gave them to me. Yes, there is hardship, but how did we get here? What did we do when we had very high crude production?

“We neglected our communities; we neglected the goose that lays the golden eggs; we forgot even to give them a good standard of living.

”We forgot to educate our children. Go round and look at the dilapidated schools. The education environment must be decent enough for pupils to want to learn.

”We can complain from now till eternity that the school enrollment is low. But did we do anything to encourage the enrolment process? We must ask ourselves because it is a matter of conscience.”

How Nigerians perceive Tinubu

However, Nigerians have taken to Twitter (now X) to slam the president’s insistence with many of them questioning his steps and decisions.

Afrikaconfidential wrote, “You definitely didn’t come to look for money and exploit what’s left of Nigeria, so can you please explain what “emilokan” means? Emilokan to serve the people or emilokan to get my own share of the “national loot?” Before you answer, who bribes their way that desperately just for the opportunity to serve the people? Abi you think we’ve forgotten?”

“You came to work by buying New presidential jet, Yatch, Cadillac, new cars for Remi, imported SUVs for lawmakers, you came to work indeed. You can only deceive your senseless fanatical followers!”, Edo igbos.

Mr Fowosere noted, “But you are enjoying the most luxury money can buy from governments money
While Nigerians are suffering like they have never ever suffered before.
Not everybody is delusional like your APC supporters.”

“I feel insulted by Tinubu. Number one, you forced yourself on Nigeria. Number two, you are obviously enjoying the trappings of the office. If not, why would you insist on buying a luxurious presidential even though you have your private one. Vp’s quarters, the escalade? All you just want is to be “prezzdent” and now that you are, you are confused: Hail the Emperor! Just prepare to charge everybody in Nigeria for treason soon”, Dapsie noted.
