Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson.

Okonkwo announced the appointment on Thursday through a statement shared on his official X account, expressing gratitude to Atiku for entrusting him with the role.

“I give God all the glory for being appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank His Excellency for the immense confidence reposed in me,” Okonkwo wrote.

Okonkwo praises Atiku’s leadership style

In his statement, Okonkwo described Atiku as a leader who values consultation and dialogue, saying the former vice president encourages constructive engagement rather than taking offence when associates express differing opinions.

According to him, Atiku’s willingness to listen and seek compromise reflects an inclusive leadership approach capable of resolving political disagreements.

South-East concerns discussed

Okonkwo revealed that before accepting the appointment, discussions were held with Atiku and senior members of the ADC over concerns relating to the political interests of Nigeria’s South-East.

He said the conversations addressed issues arising from the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as current political realities, adding that the region’s interests were considered during the consultations.

Appreciation to party leaders

The new spokesperson also acknowledged several party figures for their roles in strengthening the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.

He specifically thanked Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their support.

Okonkwo also expressed gratitude to his family, friends and supporters, asking for continued prayers as he assumes what he described as a demanding responsibility.

“I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision and protection needed to carry out this challenging responsibility, which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria,” he said.

Appointment follows earlier criticism

The appointment comes only weeks after Okonkwo openly questioned reports that the ADC was considering a vice-presidential candidate from the South-South for the 2027 presidential election.

At the time, he argued that such a decision would further sideline the South-East, noting that the region has not produced either Nigeria’s president or vice president since the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

Despite those reservations, the ADC later selected Rotimi Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate after he secured the party’s presidential nomination.

The appointment of Okonkwo is expected to strengthen Atiku’s communications team as the ADC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general election.
