Cash gifts at graduation

In a heartwarming turn of events at the commencement ceremony of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, graduating students were met with an unexpected and generous surprise. Robert Hale Jr., the esteemed co-founder of Granite Telecommunications and a noted philanthropist, took to the stage to deliver not only an inspiring speech but also a remarkable gift that left the audience in awe.

The Surprise Announcement

As the rain drizzled down on the commencement proceedings, anticipation filled the air as the graduates eagerly awaited their turn to cross the stage and receive their diplomas. Little did they know that their graduation day would be marked by an extraordinary act of kindness.

Robert Hale Jr., accompanied by his wife Karen, stepped forward to address the graduating class, their families, and faculty members gathered at the ceremony. With a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye, Hale began his speech, acknowledging the resilience and perseverance displayed by the graduates, especially in the face of the challenges posed by the global pandemic.

A Generous Gesture

Just when the audience thought the speech had reached its climax, Hale dropped a bombshell that sent ripples of excitement and disbelief throughout the crowd. He announced that each graduating student would receive a cash gift of £1,000, courtesy of himself and his wife Karen. However, there was a catch – the students were encouraged to pay it forward by donating £500 of the gifted amount to a person or organisation in need.

“The greatest joys in life that we have experienced have come from giving,” Robert Hale Jr. said onstage, referring to himself and his wife Karen. “We want to share that gift of giving with you today.”

Inspiring Acts of Kindness

As the graduates made their way across the stage to receive their diplomas, they were also handed their envelopes containing the cash gifts.
