The African Development Bank Group is inviting applications for the role of Principal Environmental and Social Audit Specialist (PAGL2). About the Role
The successful candidate will join the Office of the Auditor General, contributing to independent audit and advisory services that strengthen governance, risk management, and compliance. The role focuses specifically on environmental and social (E&S) safeguards across the Bank’s portfolio of public and private sector projects.
This position is central to ensuring that development initiatives meet international environmental and social standards, while also improving systems that protect communities, ecosystems, and project stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
The Principal Environmental and Social Audit Specialist will:
- Lead and support environmental and social components of internal audits across Bank-financed operations
- Evaluate compliance with safeguards such as Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), and Resettlement Action Plans (RAPs)
- Assess the effectiveness of environmental and social risk management systems
- Conduct field missions and site visits to verify safeguards implementation
- Prepare audit reports and provide actionable recommendations
- Offer technical advisory support on E&S safeguards and risk mitigation
- Contribute to audit methodology, tools, and internal capacity building
- Mentor junior auditors and promote knowledge sharing within the organization
Eligibility Requirements
Education:
- Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Social Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field
- Professional certifications in auditing or environmental management are an advantage
Experience:
- Minimum of six years of relevant experience in environmental and/or social audits, compliance reviews, or due diligence
- Experience working with development institutions, donor agencies, consulting firms, or government bodies is preferred
Core Competencies:
- Strong expertise in environmental and social safeguards, including climate risk, biodiversity, labor standards, and community health
- Solid understanding of audit methodologies and risk-based assessment
- Experience in field verification and stakeholder engagement
- Proficiency in audit and data analysis tools such as Excel, Power BI, or audit platforms
- Excellent communication and reporting skills
- Fluency in English or French, with working knowledge of the other language
