MTN Group has announced the appointment of Ikenna Ikeme, the current General Manager of Regulatory Affairs at MTN Nigeria, as Executive for Group Regulatory Affairs, effective 7 September 2026.
The appointment is part of two internal executive changes announced by the telecommunications group as it strengthens its leadership capabilities and accelerates the execution of its Ambition 2030 strategy.
According to a statement from the Group, Ikeme will move from his current role at MTN Nigeria to take on a group-level regulatory leadership position, where he will oversee the company’s regulatory agenda across its markets.
“In his new role, Ikeme will provide strategic leadership across the MTN Group’s regulatory agenda, working closely with the Group Legal and Regulatory Affairs office and teams across MTN’s markets.
“His responsibilities will include strengthening regulatory governance, managing regulatory risks, driving policy advocacy, supporting strategic business initiatives, and fostering strong relationships with regulators and key stakeholders,” MTN stated.
Telecommunications Sector Experience
Ikeme has spent more than two decades working across banking, telecommunications, regulatory affairs and corporate strategy, with much of his career focused on the regulatory environment in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
Before joining MTN Nigeria in February 2018, he was Director of Regulatory and Corporate Social Responsibility at Etisalat Nigeria, a position he held for two years.
At Etisalat, he was responsible for developing and implementing regulatory strategy and compliance, while also leading the company’s corporate social responsibility activities. He also previously spent almost seven years at Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited, the company that operated Etisalat Nigeria, where he served as Head of Regulatory Strategy and Compliance from July 2009 to February 2016.
His telecommunications career began at Celtel Nigeria, now part of the MTN-era competitive history of Nigeria’s mobile market, where he held roles in interconnect and carrier relations before becoming Manager of Universal Service and Consumer Affairs.
Ikeme’s professional career, however, began in banking and legal services. He worked at First Atlantic Bank, where he managed the Oba Akran and Ikorodu Road branches, after earlier serving as a branch manager and credit control officer at Standard Trust Bank. He also worked as a Regional Legal Officer at Diamond Bank between 1996 and 2000.
His academic background combines law and business. Ikeme holds an LLB from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and an MBA in Banking and Finance from Enugu State University of Science and Technology. He also attended the Nigerian Law School and completed an Advanced Management Program at MIT Sloan Executive Education in 2025.
