Six women, most of them American citizens, have filed a criminal complaint in France accusing former Elite Model Management executive Gérald Marie of rape and human trafficking, escalating long-running allegations against one of the fashion industry’s most influential former executives.
The complaint was filed in Paris on July 15 by lawyer Mathias Darmon on behalf of the women, who allege they were sexually abused between the 1980s and 1990s while pursuing modelling careers in the French capital. The complainants, now aged between 45 and 60, claim Marie used his authority within Elite Model Management to exploit young aspiring models through coercion and abuse of power.
Marie, who oversaw Elite’s European operations for approximately 15 years during the height of the supermodel era, has denied all allegations through his legal team.
Allegations Add to Growing List of Complaints
The latest filing follows a separate complaint submitted in June by former American supermodel Carre Otis, who accused Marie of raping her when she was 17 years old.
According to attorney Mathias Darmon, the six new complaints form part of a broader effort to seek accountability for alleged abuses committed during Marie’s tenure at Elite. Several of the women had previously reported similar allegations to French authorities in 2020 and 2021, while one complainant says she was a minor at the time of the alleged offences.
The accusations paint a picture of an alleged pattern in which young models entering the industry were vulnerable to exploitation by powerful agency executives who controlled access to contracts, international assignments and career opportunities.
Human Trafficking Allegation Broadens the Case
In addition to rape accusations, prosecutors have been asked to examine allegations of human trafficking.
Under French law, human trafficking extends beyond forced transportation or detention and can include the recruitment or exploitation of individuals through abuse of authority or vulnerability for sexual exploitation. The complainants argue that Marie allegedly leveraged his professional influence over aspiring models to facilitate such abuse.
Whether investigators determine that the legal threshold for trafficking has been met will depend on evidence gathered during any formal inquiry. The case also revives questions surrounding historical allegations that date back more than three decades.
Marie has previously faced similar accusations, but French prosecutors closed an earlier case in 2023 after determining that the alleged offences were barred by the country’s statute of limitations. His lawyer maintains that he categorically rejects all accusations made against him.
Legal experts note that dismissals based on limitation periods do not constitute findings on the truth or falsity of allegations but instead reflect procedural restrictions on prosecuting older cases.
Renewed Scrutiny of Fashion Industry
The new complaints arrive amid continuing efforts to examine allegations of sexual abuse within the international modelling industry.
In recent years, numerous former models have publicly described experiences of exploitation by influential figures who exercised significant control over their careers. The #MeToo movement has also encouraged survivors to come forward with allegations that remained unreported for decades.
Earlier this year, lawyers representing multiple women said they intended to provide French authorities with documents they believe could establish links between Marie and convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. No criminal charges have been brought connecting Marie to Epstein, and no court has established any criminal collaboration between the two.
Investigation Yet to Be Confirmed
French judicial authorities have not publicly confirmed whether a formal investigation has been opened following the latest complaints.
If prosecutors proceed, the case could become one of the most significant legal examinations of alleged abuse of power within the global modelling industry, revisiting claims that have shadowed one of fashion’s most influential former executives for years.
Marie continues to deny all allegations against him.
