The world football governing body, FIFA, has suspended Nepal from international football activities after citing serious violations of its statutes linked to external interference in the administration of the country’s football federation.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was announced following a prolonged dispute involving the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) and Nepal’s National Sports Council, the government body responsible for overseeing sports administration.
According to FIFA, the decision was triggered by what it described as undue third-party involvement in the affairs of Nepalian football.
FIFA Cites Governance Violations and External Influence
The organization maintains strict rules requiring national football associations to operate independently from government influence and external control.
In a formal communication sent to ANFA, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström stated that the federation had been suspended due to what the governing body characterized as significant breaches of FIFA statutes.
The controversy stems from actions taken by Nepal’s National Sports Council earlier this year.
In March 2026, the council suspended ANFA for three months while the football association was preparing to conduct elections under a process previously agreed upon with FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
Although the suspension was later lifted in May, disagreements over governance reforms and election procedures continued.
The electoral congress required to establish new leadership has faced repeated delays, with the sports council issuing directives that included proposed amendments to ANFA’s statutes under Nepal’s sports development regulations.
International Ban Threatens Nepal Football Development
The suspension carries significant consequences for Nepalian football.
National teams, clubs, officials and players will be barred from participating in FIFA-sanctioned international competitions and events.
The country will also lose access to FIFA development funding, training programs and educational initiatives while the suspension remains in place.
ANFA officials described the development as a major setback for football in the country.
The association said discussions are underway with relevant stakeholders to resolve the dispute and restore Nepal’s standing within international football.
Football administrators warned that the suspension could negatively affect player development and limit opportunities for emerging talents seeking international exposure.
Conditions for Reinstatement
FIFA indicated that the suspension could be lifted if the National Sports Council reverses the decisions that led to the conflict and allows ANFA to complete its electoral process without external interference.
Government representatives have also expressed concern about the situation and signaled a willingness to explore solutions aimed at ending the impasse and protecting the future of football in Nepal.
Nepal’s men’s national team is currently ranked 175th in the FIFA world rankings, while the women’s national team holds the 88th position globally.
