Governor Seyi Makinde has reassured residents of Oyo State that efforts to secure the release of abducted schoolchildren remain active, insisting that authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the children return home safely.
Speaking during an engagement with social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) and other protesters in Ibadan, the governor acknowledged the anguish being experienced by parents and members of the public over the incident.
Makinde said he personally shares in the pain of the affected families, noting that he understands the fears and concerns surrounding the children’s continued captivity.
“I am also distressed because I have children of my own,” the governor said. “What has happened to these children is heartbreaking, and I fully understand the concerns being expressed by their families and by the people of Oyo State.”
The governor revealed that it had been more than a month since the abduction occurred but emphasized that security agencies remain fully engaged in efforts to secure the children’s freedom.
While declining to disclose operational details due to the sensitive nature of the rescue mission, Makinde stated that available intelligence indicates the children and their teachers are still alive.
According to him, the situation requires a carefully coordinated approach because of the age and vulnerability of the victims.
“This is a special operation,” he said. “For the first time in Nigeria, criminals have targeted nursery and primary school children in this manner. These are children who cannot fend for themselves or escape danger on their own, so every step must be taken with extreme caution.”
Makinde urged residents to remain patient and avoid actions that could compromise ongoing security operations. He expressed confidence that the children would eventually be rescued and reunited with their families.
“I give you my word that we are doing everything possible. By the grace of God, these children will be brought back safely,” he said.
Addressing concerns about possible negotiations with the kidnappers, the governor acknowledged that communication channels exist but stressed that the government’s priority remains the safe return of the victims.
He maintained that the authorities are focused on preserving lives and ensuring that no action taken jeopardizes the rescue effort.
The governor’s comments came amid growing public pressure for stronger action over the abduction, with protesters demanding greater transparency and urgency from authorities handling the case.
Security agencies have continued their operations as families and residents await positive developments in the effort to secure the release of the children and their teachers.
