Obi, Kwankwaso Officially Join NDC

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his New Nigeria Peoples Party counterpart, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) from the ADC, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The high-profile defections come just hours after Obi announced his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a coordinated political realignment among opposition figures seeking a stronger platform for the next presidential contest.

Strategic Realignment for 2027

Both Obi and Kwankwaso are widely regarded as influential figures with strong grassroots followings. Their move to the NDC is seen as a strategic effort to consolidate political strength and improve their chances in the 2027 presidential race.

Sources within the party indicated that the decision was driven by the need for a unified front capable of challenging dominant political forces in Nigeria.

The duo were formally received at the party’s Abuja headquarters by the NDC National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas.

Party leadership described the development as a “growing wave of confidence” in the NDC, emphasizing that the entry of such prominent politicians strengthens the party’s national appeal.

Political Reactions and Implications

The defection has already sparked reactions across the political spectrum, with analysts suggesting it could reshape alliances and voter dynamics ahead of 2027. While supporters view the move as a bold step toward opposition unity, critics argue it may trigger further fragmentation within existing parties.

With Nigeria’s political climate gradually heating up, the entry of Obi and Kwankwaso into the NDC is expected to intensify competition and negotiations among major stakeholders.
