UNILAG Student Dies at Beach

Balogun Damilola Raphael, a student at UNILAG, died on Friday, 19 September, during a hangout at Eleko beach.

Balogun and his friends had just concluded their exams and decided to hang out at the beach on Thursday, the 18th of September. During the hangout, in an attempt to throw a backflip, Balogun got swept away by the waves, and he went missing after that. Two days later, on the 20th of September, he was declared dead when his body was found at Museyo beach in Ibeju-Lekki, 2km away from where he went missing.

About Balogun

Balogun was a 400-Level student who was recently elected as the president of the Faculty of Education. He was also the President-elect of the Nigerian University Education Students’ Association (NUESA) UNILAG chapter. According to some of his colleagues, he had a jovial spirit and was willing to get to work and serve alongside other faculty presidents. He was a vibrant leader dedicated to student welfare.

Many of his fellow students were heartbroken as they expressed their condolences and tributes on social media.

Following his friends’ questioning, the Lagos State Police Command are still carrying out some investigations.

UNILAG plans on holding a candlelight procession for Balogun on Tuesday, the 23rd of September, 2025, at 6 p.m.
