Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer.
Hassan died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a deterioration in his health, with fellow actor Jide Kosoko confirming his death to TheCable. His daughter, Kira Taiwo, also announced the development during an emotional Instagram Live session.
The actor’s death came less than a week after his family publicly disclosed that he was battling stage-four cancer and appealed for urgent medical assistance.
Kira and her sister, Lima Taiwo, had made emotional appeals to Nigerians, medical professionals and hospitals for help in finding appropriate treatment for their father. The family stressed that they were seeking medical assistance rather than financial donations.
Kira had disclosed that the family only became aware of the seriousness of Hassan’s condition about three weeks earlier. She said doctors had informed the family that chemotherapy could no longer be administered because of the advanced stage of his illness.
The family’s appeal generated widespread concern across Nigeria, with hundreds of people reportedly offering assistance. Kosoko subsequently explained that the large number of offers created logistical difficulties because Hassan was already receiving treatment in hospital and was considered too fragile to be moved around for different interventions.
Hassan was one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba-language Nollywood, with a career spanning more than four decades. He worked as an actor, filmmaker, producer and director and featured in more than 300 films, according to reports.
His death comes just days after his family had dismissed an earlier viral report claiming that he had died. On August 18, the family described the report as false and urged the public not to spread unverified information about his condition.
Further details on his funeral arrangements are expected from the family.
