COP28: UK pledges £100m for vulnerable countries tackling climate change

The UK government pledged at the ongoing COP28 Summit to support vulnerable nations in enhancing their ability to withstand the more frequent and severe effects of climate change. The £100 million package to help some of the most climate-vulnerable countries combat climate change was announced at the COP28 Summit by UK Minister of International Development and Africa Andrew Mitchell.

With advanced notice of cyclones, flooding, and other extreme weather, people will be able to evacuate danger and safeguard vulnerable communities, potentially saving lives. This will contribute to an initiative to fortify early warning systems in nations facing the most severe effects of climate change.

Along with helping to withstand natural disasters like floods, the funding will also prepare health care providers in these areas to handle an increase in infectious disease outbreaks brought on by climate-related floods, such as cholera and malaria.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, which forces 26 million into poverty every year, the Government also joined calls for bolder collective action to protect the lives, health and livelihoods of those most impacted by climate change.

Andrew Mitchell, said “The devastating effects of climate change hit the most vulnerable the hardest. “These funding commitments will help countries and people be better prepared and protected against extreme weather events and natural disasters. They will help roll out measures such as early warning systems, and open up access to climate finance to build resilient health services. “The UK will continue to press for a bold and ambitious approach to support those on the frontline of our changing climate, and to create a safer planet for us all.”

Countries vulnerable to climate change

Climate change poses a significant threat to countries worldwide, but some regions are more vulnerable than others. One such group of countries includes small island states, such as the Maldives and Tuvalu. These nations are particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change due to their low-lying geography and heavy reliance on natural resources. Rising sea levels and increased storm intensity threaten their very existence by eroding coastlines and inundating homes and infrastructure. Moreover, these countries often lack the necessary resources and infrastructure to adapt to these changes, making them even more vulnerable.

Another group of countries vulnerable to climate change includes those in arid or semi-arid regions, such as parts of Africa and the Middle East. These areas already face water scarcity issues, and climate change exacerbates this problem. The increased frequency and intensity of droughts lead to reduced water availability, negatively impacting agriculture, livelihoods, and overall food security. Additionally, these regions are often economically disadvantaged and lack the resources and technology necessary to mitigate or adapt to the changing climate effectively.

Countries with high coastal populations, such as Bangladesh and Vietnam, face significant vulnerability to climate change. Their densely populated coastal areas are prone to coastal flooding and storm surges, putting millions of people at risk. These countries also rely heavily on agriculture, which is highly sensitive to climate variability. Disruptions in crop production not only threaten food security but also have long-term socioeconomic consequences for these already impoverished nations.
