The Future Project held the 14th edition of the annual Future Awards on November 24th at the Balmoral Convention Centre, The Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. The awards which was themed, “Nigeria’s New Tribe” was attended by dignitaries such as the former governor of Ogun State, Segun Osoba; Deputy Chief of Staff to the Vice President, Ade Ipaye; Google Country Manager, Juliet Ehimuan; Chief of Staff to the Kaduna State Governor, Muhammadu Sani Abdullahi; actress and producer, Lala Akindoju; comedian, Chioma ‘Chigurl’ Omeruah, among others.
The Future Awards Africa was founded in 2006 to celebrate young people between the ages of 18 and 31 who have made outstanding achievements in their respective fields. It has been described by Forbes as the most important award for young Nigerians. Past winners include Tara Fela-Durotoye (2007), Anthony Joshua (2007), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2006), Tolu Ogunlesi (2011), D’banj (2008) and Seun Onigbinde (2012). The co-founders themselves have gone on to run presidential campaigns in Africa, including for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana.
The award has had over 1,914 nominees and 230 winners in 14 years. At the 2019 edition, Burna Boy bags two awards, the Prize for Music and the highly competitive Young Person of the Year.
