Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor in the 2027 governorship election, marking an early political realignment within the state’s ruling structure.

The endorsement followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally informed the governor and key political stakeholders of his intention to contest for the governorship seat. The meeting reportedly included members of the State Executive Council and prominent figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

Among those present were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and party stalwart Ganiyu Solomon, as well as other senior political actors.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a collective decision reached unanimously by stakeholders in attendance. He said Hamzat’s experience in government made him well-suited for the role.

“We just received Mr Deputy, who had come with a very powerful delegation of our leaders in the state to inform us of his intention,” the governor said.

“It was unanimous with all of us to say that Mr Deputy Governor is a man who is fit and well-prepared for this job.”

Sanwo-Olu highlighted his seven-year working relationship with Hamzat, describing him as a leader with “integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support,” and praised his familiarity with the workings of state governance.

The development signals an early consolidation within the APC political structure in Lagos as preparations gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
