In light of the severe traffic congestion caused by the now-halted repair work on the Independence Bridge, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged businesses and organizations across Lagos to adopt innovative work arrangements, such as remote work and hybrid models. “A temporary shift in work culture can go a long way in reducing traffic pressure and supporting our collective wellbeing,” he said.
By easing the daily commuter load, Sanwo-Olu believes these measures can help keep the city functional during the repair period, blending practicality with a vision for a more adaptable Lagos.
This was revealed in a heartfelt press release on X (formerly Twitter), where he issued an apology to Lagosians for the severe traffic congestion that plagued the city on April 2.
Acknowledging the frustration, delays, and disruptions caused by the Independence bridge closure, Sanwo-Olu emphasized his empathy as a fellow commuter, stating, “I feel your pain, and we do not take your patience and resilience for granted.”
On the morning of April 3, 2025, the Lagos State Governor visited the Independence Bridge near Bonny Camp to personally oversee the ongoing repair work spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Works.
The governor clarified that the decision to repair the Independence Bridge was not impulsive but the result of over three years of meticulous planning.
The bridge’s structural integrity had deteriorated to a critical point, posing a significant risk to public safety. “Delaying this intervention any further would have put lives at risk,” Sanwo-Olu stated, underscoring the urgency of the repairs.
While the repairs are vital to avert a potential collapse, he admitted the heavy burden they have placed on commuters navigating Lagos’ already bustling roads.
Immediate Measures to Ease Congestion
Determined to mitigate the gridlock, Sanwo-Olu revealed that his administration is collaborating with relevant agencies to enhance traffic management.
Additional traffic monitoring officials and security personnel have been deployed to ensure a smoother flow on alternative routes. “We are not just watching from the sidelines,” he assured Lagosians, promising proactive steps to alleviate the chaos.
These efforts aim to provide immediate relief while the essential repairs continue, reflecting a hands-on approach to the traffic crisis.

Meanwhile, in a significant policy reversal, the Federal Government on Wednesday rescinded its decision to fully close the bridge to vehicular movement.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, via a statement issued by Lagos Federal Controller of Works, Mrs Olukorede Kesha.
