Pastor Alexander Idachaba has become the first patient to undergo a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy at Redeemer’s Health Village Hospital, Redemption City, Ogun State.
Koyedachaba, a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God and a PhD holder in Electrical Engineering, said he chose to undergo the procedure at the hospital after learning that robotic-assisted surgery was available locally.
He was introduced to Redeemer’s Health Village through Dr Ademola Dada, the hospital’s chief executive officer, and first visited the facility in the last week of August for a consultation with Dr Efahi.
According to Idachaba, discussions with Dr Dada subsequently included the possibility of undergoing a radical prostatectomy using the hospital’s newly introduced robotic surgical system.
The option allowed him to have the procedure in Nigeria rather than travel abroad for treatment.
“I decided that was the best option and that’s the one I would prefer, rather than flying out of the country somewhere else to go do it,” he said.
Before the operation, Idachaba met with members of the surgical team, including Dr Obi and Dr Eze, who explained the procedure and what he could expect before, during and after surgery.
He said the procedure went well and described being the first patient to undergo surgery using the newly introduced robotic system as a significant experience.
“Incidentally, I’m the first one on the robot that was brought in, and that’s I consider it a great grace from God giving me that opportunity,” he said.
Patient reports minimal pain after surgery
Idachaba said he experienced some pain immediately after the procedure but that it subsided after he received medication.
He said he was preparing to leave the hospital less than 24 hours after the operation and described himself as being in good condition.
“I came out of the procedure, I had slight pain, but the moment I got a medication, I’ve not had any pain up till now,” he said.
He also expressed satisfaction with the robotic surgical equipment used for the procedure, describing it as high-grade technology.
“I know that the robot that was brought in was a high-class robot, and being a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, accuracy is guaranteed, and everything went well,” he said.
Robotic-assisted surgery uses a robotic surgical system controlled by surgeons to perform procedures with highly precise movements. In prostate surgery, the approach is used to assist surgeons in operating within the confined anatomical area around the prostate.
Patient says family plans to use hospital
Beyond his own experience, Idachaba said his family had been impressed by the hospital’s facilities.
He said his children had obtained medical cards at the hospital and that the family intended to make Redeemer’s Health Village their hospital going forward.
“My children just picked up their medical cards to ensure that we make this our hospital going forward, and the facilities are awesome,” he said.
Idachaba also said he would recommend the hospital to friends who require medical procedures.
“Definitely, I’m going to tell all my friends that need to have any kind of procedure to come here,” he said.
Redeemer’s Health Village Hospital said its robotic surgery programme is intended to provide patients with access to robot-assisted surgical procedures in Nigeria.
