Nigeria has taken a decisive step toward addressing one of the most persistent constraints on its digital economy: inadequate infrastructure. In a significant milestone for West Africa’s largest market, Lagos-based Rack Centre has inaugurated what it claims is the country’s most advanced and energy-efficient hyperscale data centre to date.
The $120 million facility, named LGS2, is located in the Ikeja district of Lagos and adds 12 megawatts of IT capacity to Nigeria’s nascent data hosting landscape—effectively doubling the country’s live data centre footprint. The launch marks a notable shift in Nigeria’s digital trajectory, not led by government or international tech giants, but by a private local player operating with global ambitions.
LGS2 is engineered to handle artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, built on a greenfield site, and designed with energy efficiency at its core. Rack Centre says the facility boasts the lowest power usage effectiveness (PUE) rating in the country, thanks to an integrated energy system combining gas turbines, diesel generators, and solar technology.
“We built LGS2 to global standards because Nigerian businesses—and indeed Africa—deserve infrastructure that supports not just today’s needs, but tomorrow’s possibilities,” said Dr Ayotunde Coker, Group CEO of Rack Centre, during the facility’s unveiling.
