What Is the Marshall Scholarship?

The Marshall Scholarship is one of the most competitive international scholarship programmes available to American graduates.

It funds study at UK institutions and aims to develop future leaders who can contribute to mutual understanding between the United States and the United Kingdom.

Beyond academic study, recipients gain access to a broad professional and cultural experience, building lifelong connections across both countries.

According to the Commission, candidates are assessed based on three primary criteria:

* Academic excellence
* Leadership potential
* Ambassadorial potential and the ability to strengthen UK-US understanding

Application Process and Requirements

Prospective applicants are encouraged to carefully review eligibility requirements, scholarship pathways, and official application rules before submitting an application.

Candidates must complete their applications through the scholarship’s online system and secure endorsement from their U.S. undergraduate institution.

Applications must be approved by a designated institutional representative, such as a president, provost, or academic dean.

The Commission noted that applicants should contact their university advisors early in the process, as institutions may impose internal deadlines that precede the official scholarship deadlines.

Key Deadlines for the 2027 Competition

For the 2027 Marshall Scholarship competition, applicants and recommenders must submit all required materials by September 29, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in the time zone of the endorsing institution.

Universities must complete endorsement and final submission of applications by October 1, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in the same time zone.

Applicants are required to submit three recommendation letters alongside their application materials.

Selection and Interview Process

Applications will be reviewed by regional selection committees across eight centres in the United States.

Candidates who advance to the next stage are expected to receive notification of interview invitations between early and mid-November 2026.

Following interviews, successful candidates will be informed of scholarship offers and will be required to accept or decline within five days of receiving notification.

Final awards remain subject to scholars securing admission offers from eligible UK universities.
