Match Report
Manchester United have only themselves to blame (and a controversial penalty) for their loss. United started the match strongly by creating multiple opportunities to take advantage of West Ham’s high backline. Garnacho came close to scoring when his shot hit the crossbar and Dalot missed a golden opportunity to score when he dribbled into an open net position. How he couldn’t find the target only he and the football gods could answer.
After all the wasteful opportunities by Manchester United, the first half ended with a scoreline of 0-0. The second half began with West Ham finding their footing in the match. They pressed against United while having the momentum and were rewarded with a goal. West Ham attacked down the right and Bowen fed Ings, who took a poor shot. But it worked out into a perfect assist for Summerville – another sub – who waited at the back post to strike it home. The hammers broke the deadlock to lead.
United came back strongly to find the equaliser in the next 8 minutes of sustained attack. It came about when Alvarez went off the pitch and United loaded the box for a cross. Zirkzee won first contact with his shoulder and Casemiro was there to head home the goal. United looked like they were back in the match with the scoreline reading 1-1.

But there was drama in the final moments!
The VAR sent ref David Coote to the pitchside monitor to examine a collision between Matthijs de Ligt and Danny Ings. Replays showed the United defender clipping the ball before catching the West Ham attacker – but after a long review, the referee decided there was enough contact to warrant a penalty.
Man Utd’s players were incensed but Bowen kept calm and found the back of the net. The goal won the hammers the match and put them 13th in the table, ahead of Man Utd on goals scored. Also, it helps quel the pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui as West Ham would look into building momentum from this victory.
On the other hand, the scrutiny will be back for Erik ten Hag. Manchester United have now won only once in eight matches across all competitions. It’s been one of Man United’s worst start of a season in their history. It’s yet to be seen if they can recover from hitting this new low.
