The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is set to introduce V-Pass, a biometric facial recognition system designed to modernise passenger processing across its domestic airport terminals, in a move aimed at improving security, reducing waiting times and enhancing the overall travel experience.

According to a FAAN statement on X, the technology will enable passengers to verify their identities using facial recognition after completing a one-time enrolment process, reducing reliance on physical identity documents during airport processing.

The authority said the new system is expected to make passenger movement through airport checkpoints faster and more seamless by enabling automated identity verification at electronic gates (e-Gates).

FAAN noted that the V-Pass platform has been developed with data protection as a core consideration and complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), providing safeguards for the collection, storage and processing of passengers’ biometric information.

The deployment forms part of the agency’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at introducing technology-driven solutions to improve operational efficiency and customer service across Nigeria’s airports.

The authority said the introduction of facial recognition technology aligns with global aviation trends, where airports increasingly rely on biometric systems to expedite passenger processing while maintaining high security standards.

Many leading international airports have adopted biometric technologies to facilitate check-in, security screening and boarding, reducing dependence on manual document verification and improving operational efficiency.

Industry observers say the successful implementation of V-Pass could significantly improve passenger experience at Nigeria’s domestic airports, particularly during peak travel periods when congestion often leads to long queues.

FAAN has yet to announce a nationwide rollout timeline or specify the airports that will be the first to deploy the V-Pass system. However, the authority said the initiative underscores its commitment to delivering smarter, safer and more efficient airport services through digital innovation.
